Neuropsychological evaluation
Testing for Cognitive Differences and Screening for Psychological Concerns for Ages 6-18 years
(We will consider requests for testing 19- to 25-year-olds on a case-by-case basis)
Neuropsychological evaluations detect the cognitive impact of various medical/neurological conditions that occur as part of development (“developmental”) or happen later in life (“acquired”). Domains assessed include IQ, attention/executive functioning, verbal and visual learning and memory, verbal/language skills, visual-spatial processing, fine motor coordination, visual-motor integration, and processing speed.
Commonly occurring conditions that may result in cognitive difficulties include:
Head Injury/concussion testing/traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Seizure Disorders/Epilepsy-generalized (absence) or localized
Brain tumor/cancer (e.g., ALL, medulloblastoma, posterior fossa tumor)
Congenital heart disease
Genetic/Chromosomal Disorders (e.g., Fragile X, Turner syndrome, Down syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, disorders causing intellectual disability or Autism Spectrum Disorder)
Late effects of Prematurity
Developmental impact from prenatal alcohol or drug exposure (e.g., Neonatal abstinence syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder)
Neurocutaneous Disorders (e.g., Neurofibromatosis)
Sickle Cell Disease/stroke (perinatal stroke or childhood onset)
Infections (e.g., Meningitis, encephalitis)
We also screen for psychological factors commonly associated with these conditions such as:
Inattention and/or hyperactivity/impulsivity (ADHD)
Anxiety and depression
Oppositionality, defiance, or aggression
Social issues such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder
